Substance Use and Addiction Help

Please call 911 if you are or someone is experiencing an overdose.

Substance abuse refers to the excessive use of a substance in ways that harm both yourself and those around you. It involves both physical and psychological dependence. Psychological dependence is characterized by a strong craving to continue using a substance, even without physical dependence. Physical dependence, on the other hand, results from prolonged substance use and leads to withdrawal symptoms when the substance is stopped. For instance, alcohol can cause both physical and psychological dependence. "Addiction" fits within this definition but can extend beyond substances to include behaviors like food, gambling, and sex.
